We always love hearing your tips, tricks and suggestions for nebuliser use. Miss Selby got in touch and gave us some tips for cleaning the Omron MicroAir nebulisers.
Thea Selby has been a fan of the Omron MicroAir nebulisers for 3 years. Her first was the U22 and in April 2018 she upgraded to an Omron U100. Over time she has developed her own protocol for cleaning her nebuliser and used it very successfully. She has very generously offered to share it here for anyone who may be struggling.
What will you need?
Miss Selby suggests that the equipment you’ll need will be:
- Antiseptic Wipes - available locally at a pharmacy or supermarket, which she uses to clean to protect against germs.
- De-Ionised water - available from a local garage or supermarket. This is especially important if you live in a hard water area to prevent lime scale formation
- A small container and, ingeniously, Miss Selby uses the MicroAir cover.
Method
Fill the small container with the de-ionised water and then soak the mesh cap for 45 minutes. Do this on a daily basis. Dry the mesh by resting it on a paper towel, giving it a gentle shake to remove the excess. Miss Selby recommends that you also nebulise a small amount of the water for 1 to 2 minutes just to give the mesh an extra clean before filling with your nebule.
All the other parts, such as the medication chamber, vibrating element and mask, she cleans gently with the antiseptic wipes.
Do you boil your mesh cap?
Boiling and disinfecting the mesh cap is recommended by Omron and you can read their cleaning recommendations on this blog post: Looking after your MicroAir. Boiling the mesh is something that often gets missed and a clogged up mesh cap can hinder the efficiency and performance of the unit. Miss Selby reports that using her regime, so far boiling has been unnecessary. Her Omron U100 is as effective as they day it was bought. Her instructions are clear and simple and have worked well for Miss Selby for many months.
